Kitchen upgrades: 6 steps to fix up your old kitchen. Do you get new cabinets or reface your existing cabinets? What should you replace your counter tops with? What new amenities or additional storage can be added? And if you’re thinking of selling your home, take note: kitchens and bathrooms can be the key selling points when you place your house on the market. Be sure these rooms are updated to help boost your asking price. Here are 6 tips for your kitchen remodeling project:
1) Layout and theme. Is it time to do away with the tired wallpaper and faded appliances? Create a general plan of what needs to be done. If you’re not happy with where your stove is or you’d like more kitchen cabinet space, now is the time to map everything out. Browse the Internet or through magazines for divine inspiration. Or talk to us about your choices.
2) Lighting. Can you see what’s cooking on the stove? Are you washing dishes in the dark? Does your current lighting do a better job of illuminating the floor instead of the countertop? Want energy efficient lighting, but not sure of fluorescent vs xenon vs LEDs? New lighting, well designed and compliant with Title 24 guidelines, can be an important part of a remodel or a budget upgrade.
3) Resurface or replace? Are your cabinets in poor shape? Is there unused wall space where custom cabinets would give you more storage options? Now is the time to think about new or resurfaced cabinet space. And while you’re at it, how do the floors look? It may be time to replace that old linoleum with fresh tile, wood or durable laminate. Then there is the cost and time tradeoffs between refacing & remodeling. Just refacing existing cabinets can be the fastest and lowest cost choice, but when you add in the cost of replacing the countertop, sink, and flooring, plus lighting and electrical upgrades, you might as well replace the cabinets with a full remodel. Whereas a remodel can solve those pesky problems with the current layout, a reface should be less stressful for the family and can incorporate convenience features like roll-outs and waste can drawers.
4) New Countertop? When considering kitchen annoyances, it’s often the old tile countertop which is the greatest source of dissatisfaction. Today’s modern countertop materials provide durable and beautiful surfaces to accentuate your kitchen & lifestyle.
5) Appliances. Need a new refrigerator but the one you like won’t fit the cabinet space provided? Need a new oven but can’t find many that will fit where your old one did? Sometimes it’s the appliances that drive the need for change in a kitchen layout, so getting a handle on your appliance preferences will help shape your kitchen design. For instance, changing from a cook-top & wall oven to a range could give you more countertop space.
6) Plan your budget. Carefully plan how much you want to spend and your priorities. Since there are oftentimes unexpected surprises that go along with many kitchen remodeling projects, it’s a good idea to stash a little cash. Just in case.
